Practical guide for healthcare owners

Answer engine optimisation: answer a real patient question

Answer engine optimisation, often shortened to AEO, is a marketing term for making information suitable for search experiences that answer questions. The practical starting point is simpler: answer a question your audience genuinely has, in a place where they can act on it.

Choose the question before the format

Ask reception what people struggle to understand before making contact. Is a referral needed? Which branch offers the service? Does submitting the form reserve an appointment? Choose one question with a clear owner for the facts.

A short answer should not hide a material condition. If a service is available only at one location, put that qualification beside the answer rather than much further down the page.

Show what a useful answer includes

Illustrative question: Can I request an evening appointment? A useful page explains which service and branch offer the option, whether the form is a request or an immediate booking, and how availability is confirmed.

Avoid turning the answer into a general sales paragraph. The reader needs the relevant facts, any important limit and the next step.

Keep the fuller explanation accessible

Some people need more detail before deciding. Use descriptive headings and related links to explain prices, preparation or contact arrangements where those facts are verified. A concise answer can introduce that information without replacing it.

Ask an unfamiliar reader to explain what they think happens next. If they believe a booking is confirmed when it is only requested, correct the wording and confirmation message.

Treat AI selection as uncertain

A well-written answer can help visitors directly. It does not compel a search engine or assistant to use it. Ask suppliers to assess clarity and later search evidence separately, without guaranteeing that a specific paragraph will become an AI response.
