Monitor important downloads as well as the homepage

The monitor checks only the homepage response, so an important public document can disappear without an alert.

What to change

Choose monitoring checks that represent the components the practice depends on. A homepage probe establishes a narrow fact; it does not cover downloads stored elsewhere or deep routes with different handling. Add a targeted check for the important file and confirm what counts as success, including the expected document type where useful. Rehearse the failure safely so the team sees which alert identifies the missing component and who receives it.

A worked example

Illustrative example

Illustrative test: The homepage remains healthy while the missing sample download triggers its own finding. A homepage check may remain green while a harmless sample leaflet is deliberately unavailable in a controlled test. The targeted download check identifies the file failure and sends the agreed alert. Your responder can see which component is affected without interpreting it as a complete site outage. The demonstration also checks that an error document cannot satisfy the file check merely because the server reports a successful response.

What this means for your practice

A homepage availability check says little about a leaflet stored elsewhere or a deeper route with different handling. Choose additional checks around the public resources the practice relies on. Ask your supplier to define success for an important download, including whether the expected file is actually returned rather than an error page with a successful status. Rehearse a harmless missing-file example so the team sees the right alert while the homepage remains healthy. This makes the monitoring scope understandable. The practice should know which important failures it will hear about and which remain outside the current checks, rather than assume one green indicator covers every visitor task.

How to check the result

The monitor distinguishes the file failure from overall site availability.

A mistake to avoid

A successful status can still return an error document instead of the expected file.
