If a patient tells you they found your practice through ChatGPT, the useful questions are what they saw, whether it was accurate and where it sent them. You can investigate those questions without buying a promise of guaranteed recommendations.
Start with a question your audience actually asks
Choose a service and location relevant to your practice. Use ordinary wording and avoid patient names, symptoms linked to an identifiable person or other confidential information. Record the question, date and whether the response used web search.
A branded question, such as asking about your own opening arrangements, checks a different situation from asking for providers of a service nearby. Keep them separate. Repeatedly prompting until your practice appears is not a useful test of typical discovery.
Open the source behind a claim
Follow any citation connected to your practice. Does it reach your website, another publisher or an unrelated organisation? Compare the answer with the current service information. Check location, fees where mentioned, clinician details and the next step.
OpenAI's ChatGPT search guidance explains that results and citations can be incomplete or incorrect. A citation should be checked against the page it points to. An answer mentioning your name is not evidence that the whole description is accurate.
Ask your supplier one clear access question
Ask: can OpenAI's search crawler reach our approved public service pages, and is the hosting security blocking it? OpenAI's publisher guidance identifies OAI-SearchBot for this purpose. Your supplier can check the technical settings and report the result in plain language.
Make the access decision deliberately. Public appointment information and private patient systems are different things. Do not open restricted content or remove security broadly to chase visibility. Passing an access check does not mean your practice will be selected for an answer.
Correct the source you control
Illustrative example: an answer describes a service at your previous address and links to an old page on your site. Verify the current location with the practice, correct the outdated information and check the contact route. Record the change so a later observation can be compared with it.
If the cited error belongs to another publisher, use its correction process. If the source is accurate but the answer is wrong, record that distinction. Do not rewrite good service information merely to match an inaccurate summary.
Check whether discovery leads anywhere useful
Where your approved analytics can identify a ChatGPT referral, inspect the destination and any verified enquiry outcome. A visit, a submitted request and a booked appointment are separate stages. A patient's recollection can add context but is not a complete attribution record.
Prioritise material factual errors and a clear landing page before expanding monitoring. Our AI search review service can help define a manageable scope. OpenAI states that placement is not guaranteed, so a supplier should sell specific work and a review process rather than a guaranteed citation.
