Give temporary campaign redirects an end date or trigger

A short-lived routing change remains after its campaign ends and masks the original destination.

What to change

A temporary campaign rule needs an exit condition, not just an installation instruction. Ask which business event ends the exception and who confirms that the ordinary destination is ready again. Rehearse disabling the rule before the campaign closes. Preserve the original purpose and removal decision in the handover so the next supplier does not mistake a forgotten exception for the permanent route architecture.

A worked example

Illustrative example

Illustrative test: Open a normal guide link while the campaign rule is disabled in preview. A campaign may temporarily send a normal guide address to a promotion. When the campaign ends, the owner confirms the ordinary guide is ready and the supplier removes the exception through the agreed process. Review both a campaign link and the usual guide link afterwards. The record includes the original reason and removal trigger, making it clear that a future editor should not reinstate the rule as permanent site behaviour.

What this means for your practice

A short campaign may temporarily send a normal page to a promotion. Without an agreed ending, that exception can remain long after the promotion finishes. Ask the campaign owner what event ends the change and who will confirm the usual page is ready again. Your supplier should rehearse removing the rule and show both the campaign entry and ordinary guide route. Keep the original reason with the handover. That prevents a later supplier treating an unexplained exception as a permanent part of the website. The practice should review the visitor's destination after the campaign, rather than rely on a calendar reminder that nobody has responsibility to act on.

How to check the result

The agreed ongoing destination works and the temporary rule has an accountable owner.

A mistake to avoid

Leaving unexplained temporary rules invites later routing surprises.
