Show the full wording people need before they choose

A long option or label can be shortened to an ellipsis without any usable way to see its full wording. Similar entries then become impossible to distinguish.

What to change

Ask your supplier to let essential labels wrap or provide a clear way to reveal them, including on phones where hover hints are unavailable.

A worked example

Illustrative example

Two branch names share their opening words. Their distinguishing endings remain visible or can be revealed before selection, rather than appearing only afterwards.

Why this matters to your practice

A shortened label is a problem when the missing words distinguish one choice from another. Two branch names may begin identically, making an ellipsis particularly unhelpful. Ask the supplier to use the longest real names during review and demonstrate how a visitor can see the full wording before choosing. Hover-only hints are not enough for a phone. The selected value should also remain complete on review, so somebody can check that they chose the intended branch.

A practical review example

Two branches may share their opening words, with the distinguishing location hidden after an ellipsis. A visitor should not have to choose one before discovering its full name. Ask the supplier to demonstrate both entries using touch, keyboard and reading software. Then review the chosen value on the next screen. It should remain complete enough to verify. A desktop tooltip alone does not resolve the question for a phone user or someone navigating directly among the options without a pointer.

How to check the result

Accept when visitors can distinguish and verify all available choices without guessing from a clipped prefix.

A mistake to avoid

A browser tooltip shown only on hover does little for someone using a phone, keyboard navigation or magnification.
