Make clearing a search leave a clear starting point

A clear icon may erase the text but leave old suggestions or filtered results visible. Visitors cannot tell whether the page still uses their previous query.

What to change

Agree what the search-clear action should reset, then ask your supplier to keep the words, suggestions and results consistent with that promise.

A worked example

Illustrative example

Clearing the site search removes the query and returns the agreed initial search state, with no leftover suggestion inviting the visitor into an unrelated result.

Why this matters to your practice

A clear-search control should leave the page in a state the visitor understands. Decide whether it returns to all services, an initial prompt or another useful starting point. Then ask your supplier to demonstrate the query, suggestions and results together. Old matches should not linger as though the deleted search were still active. Keep clearing the words distinct from closing the entire search panel, particularly when both actions use a small cross-shaped icon.

A practical review example

A visitor may erase their query using a small cross but still see the old matches. Ask your supplier to demonstrate the agreed cleared state and explain whether it shows all items or an initial prompt. Keep this action distinct from closing the entire search panel. Then type a new phrase and allow any delayed old response to finish. The previous suggestions should not reappear after clearing, and the new list should relate only to the current search the person can see.

How to check the result

Accept when clearing is complete, predictable and leaves focus ready for the next search without an unexplained mixture of old and new content.

A mistake to avoid

An icon inside the input may be mistaken for closing the panel unless its purpose and accessible name are clear.
