Show a valid results page after filters change

A visitor on a later results page can apply a restrictive filter and see an empty page even though matching results exist earlier. The old page number no longer fits the new set.

What to change

Ask your supplier to keep the page number compatible with each new search or filter choice, avoiding empty pages caused only by an old position.

A worked example

Illustrative example

Applying a location filter while on page four opens the valid first page of matching services instead of showing a misleading empty page four.

Why this matters to your practice

Changing a filter creates a new set of results. A person on page four may now have only one page of matches, so leaving them on an empty page four is misleading. Ask your supplier to demonstrate that combination. Your acceptance question is simple: can the visitor see the matches that actually exist? Review changes to search and sorting too, and agree a consistent approach that keeps the page number compatible with the result set.

A practical review example

Someone browsing page four may choose a branch with only a few matching services. Leaving the list on page four can falsely suggest there are no matches. Ask your supplier to demonstrate the change and its resulting page position. Then remove the filter, change sorting and use browser Back. The visible choices and page number should describe one coherent result set. This distinguishes a genuine no-results outcome from a navigation state that simply points beyond the end of an otherwise useful list.

How to check the result

Accept when any search-state change leaves page controls within the actual result range and the visitor can understand where they now are.

A mistake to avoid

Displaying No results without checking whether the page index is invalid can conceal genuinely available matches.
