Make the caption setting clear and accurate

A caption icon may be visible without indicating whether captions are enabled or which track is selected. Visitors can spend time searching for text that never appears.

What to change

Ask your supplier to give the caption control an understandable name and current state, with clear choices for the tracks actually available.

A worked example

Illustrative example

A visitor selects English captions and sees that choice retained when moving between normal and fullscreen playback, with the control clearly indicating captions are active.

Why this matters to your practice

Captions help only when people can find the control and tell whether it is on. Ask your supplier to demonstrate enabling and disabling them using keyboard and spoken feedback. If several language tracks are available, their names should make the choices clear. Review the actual published video rather than an empty player, because available tracks may differ by recording. A button that appears to switch on captions should correspond to a real, visible caption track.

A practical review example

A visitor turns on captions for a published video and expects readable words to appear. Ask your supplier to demonstrate that action through keyboard and spoken navigation, then turn them off again. If multiple languages are offered, check their labels against the real tracks. Review an actual recording rather than an empty player, because available captions can differ between videos. The control should not look enabled while pointing to a missing track or leave the visitor uncertain whether the setting changed.

How to check the result

Accept when the control, track choice and visible playback agree throughout supported player transitions.

A mistake to avoid

A caption badge in a video thumbnail does not guarantee that the embedded player exposes a usable way to activate the track.
