Make video speed settings easy to understand

A speed control can change playback without showing the current rate or can reset unexpectedly after pausing. Visitors who rely on slower or faster playback must repeatedly inspect the settings.

What to change

Ask your supplier to make the chosen playback speed clear and demonstrate its behaviour through normal player actions and transitions.

A worked example

Illustrative example

A visitor selects a slower playback rate for an explanatory video, pauses to read nearby information and resumes at the same chosen rate.

Why this matters to your practice

Playback speed can help people follow a recording at a comfortable pace. The chosen setting should be understandable and should not change unexpectedly during ordinary player actions. Ask your supplier to demonstrate choosing a speed, pausing, seeking and entering fullscreen. If the setting resets in a particular situation, the interface should make that behaviour clear. Review the label with spoken navigation as well, so a visitor can identify both the available choices and the speed currently in use.

A practical review example

A visitor may choose a slower speed to follow an explanation, then pause or enter fullscreen. Ask the supplier to show whether the chosen speed remains in effect and how any reset is communicated. Review keyboard access and the spoken current value as well as the visible menu. The available choices should be meaningful to someone unfamiliar with the player. A setting that silently changes during an ordinary transition can make the recording harder to follow even though its menu appears to work correctly.

How to check the result

Accept when the current speed is identifiable and stable through supported playback interactions, with deliberate changes reflected accurately.

A mistake to avoid

A settings menu that displays several rates without marking the active choice makes visitors infer the state from the sound alone.
