Let visitors choose an attachment without dragging it

An upload area may invite visitors to drop a file but provide no obvious keyboard or touch route to browse for one. The task depends on a desktop gesture.

Make the website useful for the people who use your practice.

What to change

Ask your supplier to provide a clearly labelled file chooser that works with keyboard and phone controls, alongside any optional drag-and-drop area.

A worked example

Illustrative example

A visitor taps Choose file on a phone, selects a test document and returns to the form with that document clearly identified.

Why this matters to your practice

Choosing an attachment should not depend on dragging a file with a mouse. A visible Choose file action provides a familiar route on phones and for keyboard users. Ask your supplier to demonstrate selecting a harmless test document and returning to the form. The chosen file should be clearly named and its next state understandable. Only offer attachment collection where the practice has an agreed purpose and handling process; the interface check does not decide what information should be requested.

A practical review example

A visitor on a phone may need to select a harmless document from the device's usual picker. Ask your supplier to open that picker from the form, choose the file and return with its name clearly shown. Repeat through keyboard and spoken navigation on desktop. The question, chooser action and current file state should be understandable together. A large decorative drop zone is not sufficient if the ordinary selection route is hidden, unnamed or disconnected from the file the visitor actually chose.

How to check the result

Accept when file selection is achievable through ordinary device controls and does not require dragging or interpreting an unlabelled icon.

A mistake to avoid

A hidden native input is useful only if the visible replacement remains properly named, operable and connected to its resulting state.
